Prediabetes — Diagnostic Criteria and Health Risks
This continuing medical education course reviews the diagnostic criteria and health risks associated with prediabetes. It also examines the current research on treatment and prevention strategies including diet interventions, lifestyle modifications, and prescription medications. In addition, the importance of the registered dietitian’s (RD) role as a member of the care team and a resource for patients with prediabetes is highlighted.
Learning Objectives
After completing this continuing education course, healthcare professionals should be better able to:
- Define the diagnostic criteria for prediabetes.
- Assess the key risk factors for prediabetes.
- Propose appropriate diet and lifestyle recommendations for patients with prediabetes.
- Counsel patients with prediabetes about the pros and cons of medication use.
- Distinguish the role of the registered dietitian as a member of the care team in prediabetes education.
