Symposium Session: Navigating the Health Landscape of Soy: Key Issues and Insights

Over the past three decades, extensive research has focused on understanding the health impact of soy foods and their components, especially isoflavones. More than 40,000 soy-related articles have been indexed in PubMed during this period. Despite this enormous amount of research, or perhaps partly because of it, confusion exists about the healthfulness of soy for different population groups. In this session, Dr. Mark Messina will synthesize current understanding of hotly debated topics such as the impact of postdiagnosis soy intake on breast cancer outcomes, the effect of vegetable oils on cardiovascular disease risk, the role processed soy products can play in the diet and more. Additionally, Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN) Liz Weiss will offer practical insights and tips for effectively communicating the science to patients and clients in a variety of settings.

This is not a webinar or course for purchase - this is a module for credit claiming for our 2024 Spring Symposium attendees and cannot be purchased or taken by non-attendees. These sessions are exclusive to our Symposium; however, the topics may be revisited in the future in the form of a webinar or self-study course.

Learning Objectives

After the session, nutrition professionals will be able to:

  1. Outline the scientific literature available on topics such as the impact of postdiagnosis soy intake on breast cancer outcomes, the effect of vegetable oils on cardiovascular disease risk, and the role processed soy products can play in the diet.
  2. Demonstrate understanding of trending nutrition and health topics and what nutrition and health professionals can do to provide evidence-based information in response.
  3. Communicate and translate the latest research and evidenced-based information on soy topics into everyday practice.
