Symposium Session: Building Your Ag IQ: What Farmers Wish Your Knew About Healthy, Sustainable Diets

More than half of people believe their food and beverage purchases have an impact on the environment, yet with less than 2% of the United States population working in agriculture, many Americans are far removed from the systems and people that bring food from the farm to their plates. Creating healthy, sustainable food systems is a complex journey balancing social, economic, health and environmental factors. As food and nutrition experts, registered dietitian nutritionists (RDNs) have the opportunity and responsibility to understand the complexity, get involved, address common questions and share evidence-based information about how our food is grown or raised, as well as the essential nutrition it provides.

On behalf of the Beef Checkoff, grab some coffee and join us for breakfast, along with three experts with unique, personal experience in agriculture: Lauren Twigge, MCN, RD, LD, Jason Sawyer, PhD and Marianne Smith Edge, MS, RD, LD, FAND. During this discussion, panelists will take the audience to the farm for a deeper look at each of the pillars of sustainability and their nutrition intersection. They will discuss the complexities of each pillar, including often-overlooked indicators and potential trade-offs, and offer suggestions for how registered dietitians can get involved in the conversation to help the public navigate our complex food system.  Panelists will discuss communication considerations and opportunities to advance healthy, sustainable diets, while providing illuminating insights aimed to help RDs bridge the gap for patients and clients between farm and plate.

This is not a webinar or course for purchase - this is a module for credit claiming for our 2023 Spring Symposium attendees and cannot be purchased or taken by non-attendees. These sessions are exclusive to our Symposium; however, the topics may be revisited in the future in the form of a webinar or self-study course.
