Recorded Symposium Session: Telehealth and Diabetes Education: A Guide to Understanding and Incorporating the New Guidelines into Your Practice

As nutrition experts, dietitians and nutritionists must understand and be able to interpret evidence-based nutrition information as it relates to diabetes management. This process can be overwhelming for health care professionals as well as people living with diabetes, especially as the use of telehealth platforms increases.

During this session , Susan Weiner, MS, RDN, CDN, CDES, FADCES, will break down and discuss the latest updates and additions to the diabetes clinical guidelines in order to help RDs promote positive health outcomes and lower complication risk. Susan will also detail how to incorporate these new recommendations into a virtual or in-person practice using non-judgmental language and a truly collaborative approach.

After attending this session, nutrition professionals should be able to:

  1. Describe the importance of MNT for people living with diabetes (PWD).
  2. Discuss how macronutrients affect blood glucose levels.
  3. Explain how to communicate with clients/patients using a telehealth platform.

Susan Weiner, MS, RDN, CDN, CDCES, FADCES is an award-winning food and nutrition expert, author and speaker, and is the owner of Susan Weiner Nutrition, PLLC. She served as a Director, on the Association of Diabetes Care and Education Specialists (ADCES) Board of Directors and was named the 2015 AADE Diabetes Educator of the Year. Susan is the recipient of the 2018 Media Excellence Award from the New York State Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the 2019 Diabetes Advocate of the Year Award from the Metropolitan New York Association of Diabetes Educators. She has extensive TV, Radio, podcast and video experience and is well versed in media communications. Susan earned her master’s degree in Applied Physiology and Nutrition from Columbia University.
