Recorded Symposium Session: Nutrition Care in Kidney Disease
According to the National Kidney Foundation, one in three US adults is at risk of developing chronic kidney disease (CKD). Factors contributing to CKD include diabetes, hypertension, smoking, and obesity. People with kidney disease have different nutritional needs depending on their level of kidney function, and often suffer from mineral and bone disorders and anemia. In this in-depth look at CKD, Dr. Victor Yu, PhD, RD, BC-ADM, will provide an overview of the pathophysiology of the kidneys; discuss the common types of dialysis; explain the nutrient needs of people with kidney disease from stages 1 to 5; and discuss the importance of nutrition assessments.
After attending this session, nutrition professionals should be able to:
- Describe the pathophysiology of the kidneys and the effects medical nutrition therapy have on improving the quality of life for those who suffer from CKD.
- Identify the common types of dialysis.
- Explain the nutrient needs of people with kidney disease from stages 1 to 5.
- Discuss the importance of and implement nutrition assessments in your daily practice as it relates to CKD.
Dr. Victor Yu has over 30 years of experience in health care, nutritional services, diabetes education, and teaching in both the Army and civilian environments. He is an active practicing clinician and an experienced professor. He is employed full time as a renal dietitian at North Augusta Dialysis clinic.
In his spare time, Dr. Yu works as a professor of nutrition at the Georgia Military College and volunteers as manuscript reviewer for the Journal of Renal Nutrition and the Journal of School Nutrition. Dr. Yu practices what he teaches: he includes at least 150 minutes of physical activity in his weekly routine, and follows a healthy diet.
