2023 Symposium Recorded Session: A Closer Look at Low- and No-Calorie Sweeteners: Safety, Efficacy, and Implementation
Today, over 40% of US adults have obesity and over 40% of the US population has prediabetes or diabetes. These numbers are predicted to increase over the next 10-20 years, especially among young people. One of the key factors contributing to these rising trends is overconsumption of added sugars. While there appears to be a general consensus that added sugars are not healthy, Americans continue to consume significantly more than the recommended intake. An alternative to added sugars for people who desire a sweet taste are low- and no-calorie sweeteners (LNCS).
But what’s the latest on LNCS? Are they really safe and effective?
Learning Objectives
After completing this continuing education activity, nutrition professionals will better be able to:
- Detail the evidence base that shows how added sugars contribute to the rising trends in obesity and diabetes.
- Define and identify the characteristics of various low- and no-calorie sweeteners.
- Interpret and integrate new and existing scientific literature on the safety and efficacy of low- and no-calorie sweeteners in decision-making.
- Teach clients how to implement low- and no-calorie sweeteners into a healthy eating pattern as a way of reducing added sugar intake.

Holly Moran, MS, RD, LD, CDCES, joined Heartland Food Products Group, maker of Splenda®, in 2021 and currently holds the role of Manager, Nutrition & Science Communications. She has a bachelor’s degree in Dietetics and a Master’s degree in Communication with a concentration in Health Communication, both from Purdue University. A strong family history of diabetes is what drew her to this specialization. Neil Skolnik, MD, is an academic family physician who sees patients and teaches residents and medical students in the family medicine residency program at Abington Jefferson Health in Abington, Pennsylvania. He is a Professor of Family and Community Medicine at the Sidney Kimmel Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University and Associate Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program at Abington Jefferson Health. Dr. Skolnik has written and edited 5 books and has published more than 400 articles, columns, poems, essays, and webinars in both the medical and lay literature including publications in JAMA, JAMA Internal Medicine, Annals of Internal Medicine, Circulation, Medscape, Philadelphia Inquirer, and USA Today. Dr. Skolnik lectures nationally on a range of topics, with a special interest in diabetes, asthma, COPD, exercise in medicine, coronary disease risk factor management, and the medical humanities. He also hosts and produces “Diabetes Core Update,” the American Diabetes Association’s official monthly podcast reviewing the most important new articles to come out in the diabetes literature every month and tries to make sure that each day he spends at least twenty minutes playing the guitar and singing.
