Recorded Webinar: The Importance of Maternal and Infant Iodine in Baby’s Brain Development

Iodine is an essential micronutrient for proper brain development during pregnancy and infancy. Iodine needs increase by more than 50% during pregnancy and many women of childbearing age are iodine deficient before they even become pregnant.

Join Dr. Elizabeth Pearce, a leader in iodine research, for a discussion on maternal and infant iodine in baby’s brain development. This session will discuss dietary iodine requirements and how they vary across the life span, as well as how population iodine status can be monitored. Participants will review the effects of iodine deficiency and also of excess iodine exposure. Dr. Pearce will describe the history of iodine nutrition in the US and globally, and how that has changed in recent decades, as well as discuss sources of iodine in the diet and current recommendations about supplementation.

Learning Objectives

At the end of this webinar, nutrition professionals will be able to:

  1. Be able to describe dietary iodine requirements.
  2. Understand the adverse effects of iodine deficiency and iodine excess, particularly in pregnancy and early life.
  3. Recognize important sources of dietary iodine.

Dr. Elizabeth N. Pearce, MD, MSc, is a Professor of Medicine and the Endocrine Fellowship Program Director at Boston University School of Medicine in the Section of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Nutrition. She received her undergraduate and medical degrees from Harvard and a masters’ degree in epidemiology from the Boston University School of Public Health. She completed her residency in internal medicine at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, and her fellowship in endocrinology at Boston University. She was the 2018-2019 President of the American Thyroid Association. She serves as the Regional Coordinator for North America for the Iodine Global Network. She is a Deputy Editor at the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism and has served in multiple additional editorial roles, including as an Associate Editor for Endocrine Practice, Clinical Thyroidology, and Thyroid. She co-chaired the 2017 American Thyroid Association’s Thyroid in Pregnancy Guidelines Task Force and is a member of the current task force for revising that guideline. She is currently serving on a World Health Organization guideline advisory panel related to assessment of iodine nutrition. Her research interests include the sufficiency of dietary iodine in the U.S., thyroid function in pregnancy, the thyroid effects of environmental disruptors, and the cardiovascular effects of subclinical thyroid dysfunction. Dr. Pearce was the 2011 recipient of the American Thyroid Association’s Van Meter Award for outstanding contributions to research on the thyroid gland and the 2018 Women in Thyroidology Woman of the Year.

Hilary Walentuk MS, RD, LDN, is a registered dietitian and Senior Nutrition Specialist with New England Dairy. She manages New England Dairy’s Continuing Education program and health-related and university partnerships across the New England region. Hilary has been quoted in publications like Yahoo Life, Good Morning America, Clean Plates and more.

Hilary holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and completed both her Master of Science in Food and Nutrition and dietetic internship through Framingham State University’s Coordinated Program in Dietetics.
