Food Insecurity in the United States: What Nutrition Professionals Need to Know

This continuing education course outlines the scope and causes of food insecurity (FI) in the United States, reviews population groups at risk of FI, and discusses the impact that FI and its associated stigma has on physical and mental health. Health professionals will learn about the tools available to screen for FI, food assistance programs that are available to assist their clients, and ethical considerations for practice.

Learning Objectives

After completing this continuing education course, nutrition professionals should be better able to:

  1. Define food insecurity (FI) and list three contributing factors.
  2. Describe and use the Hunger Vital Sign to screen for FI.
  3. Understand how FI and related stigma negatively affect health and wellness.
  4. Identify three public/government programs and one private entity that work to combat FI.
