Chronic Constipation

This continuing medical education course identifies and examines recent scientific literature addressing diet and lifestyle modifications to improve clinicians’ knowledge, competence, and performance when treating chronic constipation, and briefly explores alternative therapies and medications. It reviews the health care professionals’ role in advising dietary intervention as well as lifestyle modifications for the prevention and treatment of chronic constipation.

Learning Objectives

After completing this continuing education course, healthcare professionals should be better able to:

  1. Discuss the incidence rates of chronic constipation.
  2. List the diet and lifestyle factors that increase the risk of constipation.
  3. Assess client history for nutrient intake, dietary pattern, and attempts made to alleviate constipation.
  4. Identify and explain the combination of diet and lifestyle interventions associated with normalizing bowel habits.
  5. Recognize over-the-counter product ingredients, probiotics, and prescription products used to treat chronic constipation when seen on medication lists.
