Eating Disorders in Men

This continuing medical education course examines the current body of knowledge about adolescent and adult males with eating disorders (EDs). Gender differences in etiology, risk factors, and presentation of food, exercise, and body dissatisfaction are highlighted. Special attention is given to the muscularity-driven behaviors prevalent in the male ED population. The course evaluates the effectiveness of current ED diagnostic criteria and assessment tools in capturing EDs in males. Gender-sensitive counseling strategies are also covered. Finally, recommendations to improve clinicians’ competence and performance are made with regard to ED prevention and awareness, as well as for areas for future research, to increase positive outcomes in this population.
