This continuing education activity is designed to help you apply the information in the study guide to patient-based scenarios. Learning Objectives
After completing this activity, nutrition professionals will better be able to:
- Illustrate components of nutrition assessment to infants with various clinical conditions.
- Determine appropriate parenteral nutrition goals for preterm, late preterm, and term infants.
- Describe key aspects of nutrition therapy for infants with congenital heart disease.
- Discuss key components and benefits of human milk for enteral nutrition.
- Counsel clients on acceptable infant feeding substitutes for human milk based on the infant’s gestational age or clinical condition.
Additional Information
Patti H. Perks, MS, RDN, CNSC is a nutrition support specialist, providing infant nutrition care in Neonatal ICU’s for over 20 years, most recently at the University of Virginia (UVA) Children’s Hospital, a level IV quaternary referral center. She is a founding board member and past president of the Virginia Neonatal Nutrition Association, a nonprofit that provides education and networking opportunities for healthcare providers in infant and pediatric nutrition. Patti obtained her BS in Nutrition Science from Cornell University and her master's in nutrition from James Madison University. She completed her internship in Clinical Dietetics at the UVA Health System. Patti has been recognized by pediatric residents at UVA with the 2013 and 2016 Wahoo Team Player award in recognition of her teaching and mentorship in neonatal nutrition, and by the UVA Division of Neonatology in 2024 with the Patti Perks Nutrition Education Award.
