Osteoporosis Prevention and Treatment, 6th Edition
Osteoporosis awareness is increasing. Nutrition professionals must be aware of osteoporosis etiology, prevention, and treatment. More women and older adults than ever are participating in community and outreach health programs and seeking independent nutritionists for a consultation about their bone health. To meet the nutritional needs of those who are concerned about their bone health, nutrition professionals must understand the rationale for specific nutrient and health recommendations in both preventive health and therapeutic nutrition.
This self-directed, continuing education activity begins with an explanation of the prevalence and impact of osteoporosis and the basics of bone metabolism. These chapters are followed by diagnosing osteoporosis, a chapter on the risk factors for osteoporosis, and how biochemical measures of bone metabolism may be used. A more extensive chapter on the types of bone fracture lends insight into prevention and treatment, which follow in chapters 7, 8, and 9. Two case studies provide practice and application.
