Inside the Magnet: How MRI Image Quality is Made

Get a comprehensive look inside the MRI system and understand how the main magnetic field, RF transmission, gradients, and receiver coil technology work together to create MR Images. Learn how the design and performance of each scanner areas directly influence SNR, uniformity, distortion, fat suppression, and overall image quality. Begin with the main magnetic field (B0), where we will cover how the magnetic field is created in superconducting MRI Scanner and the equipment that is needed. Then, we will cover RF coil and the difference in RF transmit coils available. Understand the differences between Linear, CP and EP magnetization and how it affects image quality and SNR. The session continues with an analysis of gradient coils and how amplitude, slew rate, linearity, and eddy currents influence geometric accuracy, fat saturation, and signal loss. To conclude, we will cover receiver coil technology, single channel versus multi-channel and how they affect SNR and anatomical coverage, as well as an examination of ways to test for RF noise and RF coil QA practices.

Learning Objectives

1. Identify and describe the components of the MRI system and explain their roles in MRI acquisition.
2. Explain how electromagnetic fields are created in MRI Superconducting magnets.
3. Discuss the differences between RF Coil CP Mode versus EP Mode and concerns for reflection.
4. Explain the types Gradient Coils and the effect on image quality based on their Linearity and Eddy Currents.
