Claustrophobia: Managing Panic in MRI - The V.E.A.R. Method
MRI can be one of the most anxiety-provoking experiences a patient encounters in healthcare, yet technologists have a profound opportunity to improve safety, comfort, and exam success.
The V.E.A.R. Method (Verify, Educate & Validate, Anchor, Reassure & Communicate) is a practical framework for improving MRI patient safety, comfort, and exam success. This session explores strategies for accurate screening, patient education, anxiety reduction, individualized comfort measures, and effective communication throughout the MRI experience. Participants will also review best practices for patient advocacy, documentation, injury prevention, professional boundaries, and risk management. Attendees will leave with actionable tools to create safer, more compassionate imaging experiences while supporting quality outcomes for both patients and healthcare teams.
Learning Objectives
1. Apply appropriate positioning and equipment for special-needs, disabled, and anxious patients.
2. Advocate for patient safety and comfort in high-volume imaging environments.
3. Use practical techniques and resources to improve the MRI patient experience.
4. Reduce liability, injury, and safety risks for patients and technologists.
5. Recognize signs of claustrophobia and anxiety and implement strategies to reduce patient distress.
