Recorded Musculoskeletal MRI: Qualitative and Quantitative Techniques and Analysis

This lecture will focus on the role of advanced algorithms and parametric mapping in enhancing reproducibility, characterizing tissue, and enabling longitudinal monitoring within the musculoskeletal (MSK) environment. We will explore the evolving role of MRI in assessing soft tissue, cartilage, bone, and joint integrity using advanced techniques. Qualitative techniques such as 3D Multi-Echo GRE, Metal Artifact Reduction Sequences (MARS), Fast Spin Echo (3D FSE) and Zero Echo Time (ZTE) imaging will be explored, as well as quantitative MRI methods including Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) for evaluating muscle microstructure and nerve integrity, T2 Mapping for cartilage composition assessment and early osteoarthritis detection. Acquisition principles, image reconstruction strategies and post-processing workflows and how sequence design and optimization impact image quality and diagnostic value will also be addressed.

Participants will leave with a comprehensive understanding of MRI applications in musculoskeletal (MSK) imaging and actionable strategies to demonstrate measurable improvements in applying qualitative and quantitative techniques in practice.

  1. Explain the acquisition principles of advanced musculoskeletal MRI sequences and evaluate how these principles enhance anatomical visualization and facilitate diagnosis.
  2. Differentiate between qualitative and quantitative MRI techniques in MSK imaging and recognize their respective clinical and research applications.
  3. Identify key image reconstruction and post-processing methods used in advanced MSK MRI, including parametric mapping and data analysis tools.
  4. Evaluate the benefits and limitations of incorporating advanced acquisitions into routine musculoskeletal imaging protocols.
