Recorded MRI in the Age of AI: Speed, Care, and the Future of the Technologist

The rapid adoption of AI technologies, new coil designs, and advanced pulse sequences has led imaging centers to demand faster MRI scan times and higher throughput. While AI tools and innovative hardware offer remarkable improvements in efficiency and image quality, this push for speed risks compromising patient care, increasing information overload for technologists, and depersonalizing the imaging experience and the critical thinking skills that technologists bring to patient interactions.

This presentation educates MRI technologists on the latest advancements in AI-assisted imaging, new coil innovations, and pulse sequences, while emphasizing the continued importance of patient-centered care. Strategies to manage information overload, distinguish novice versus experienced practice, avoid burnout, and maintain personal agency in an increasingly automated world are also explored. Attendees will leave with actionable steps to balance technology with compassionate, skilled care.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify the keyways AI, new coils, and advanced pulse sequences are transforming MRI workflows.
  2. Explain the potential trade-offs between faster scan times and quality patient care.
  3. Recognize signs of information overload and technologist burnout in a high-paced imaging environment.
  4. Differentiate the communication, safety, and workflow management skills of novice versus experienced MRI technologists.
  5. Discuss the current and future role of automation in MRI and the irreplaceable need for human oversight.
  6. Demonstrate strategies to maintain patient-centered care despite pressures for higher imaging throughput.
