MRI Education: Current State & Future Goals

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) continues to evolve as a critical imaging modality, yet challenges in education, workforce development, and safety practices persist across the profession. This session provides an in-depth examination of the current state of MRI education and training pathways, including on-the-job training, formal academic programs, and certification routes such as ARRT and ARMRIT.

Participants will explore key factors contributing to staffing shortages, workforce burnout, and inconsistencies in educational standards, as well as the impact of lingering biases and regulatory variation on the profession. Emphasis will be placed on the essential role of MRI technologists in maintaining safety, advancing clinical competence, and supporting high-quality patient care.

The session will also highlight future directions in MRI education, including the need for standardized curricula, enhanced safety training, and expanded clinical training opportunities. Attendees will gain practical insight into strategies that support workforce development, improve safety awareness, and strengthen the role of the MRI technologist within the healthcare team.
