Introducing Implanted Devices and Foreign Objects into the MR Environment

This lecture will address the three primary energies in MRI, the associated risks of each, and how to evaluate these risks when introducing implanted devices and foreign objects into the MR environment. Participants will learn about ferromagnetic detection, the different formats of ferromagnetic detection systems, and when it should be utilized. Also discussed will be the importance of testing and labeling objects, ASTM labeling, and what each label means. By the end of this session, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and skills to effectively assess and mitigate risks in the MR setting.

Learning Objectives

  1. Identify the three primary energies in MRI and their associated risks.
  2. Explain what ferromagnetic detection is and its role in introducing objects to the MR environment.
  3. Recognize ASTM labeling and understand the significance of each label and their differences.
  4. Determine when, how, and who to involve in risk assessment.
