Nutrition and Cardiovascular Disease, 4th Edition

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention and treatment have made tremendous strides over the past decades. Nevertheless, CVD morbidity and mortality affect millions each year. The largest federal programs and research interventions have focused on CVD. To meet the nutritional needs of those who are concerned about preventing and treating CVD, dietetic practioners must understand the rationale for specific nutrient and health recommendations in both preventive health and therapeutic nutrition.

This self-directed, accredited CPE program begins with an explanation of basic heart and circulatory system physiology. In Chapter 2, the most common CVD pathophysiologies are described, and lipid transport basics in Chapter 3.

Chapter 4 reviews the primary epidemiological studies that form the basis for preventive and therapeutic recommendations to help the dietetic practitioner explain them to his/her clients. Risk factors and risk factor assessment tools are also discussed. Chapter 5 summarizes the primary CVD prevention recommendations. Chapter 6 introduces the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Nutrition Care Process (NCP) and summarizes the first two components, nutrition assessment and diagnosis. Chapter 7 continues this therapeutic process with interventions, monitoring, and evaluation. Because medications usually are an integral part of therapy for many with CVD, Chapter 8 describes usual pharmacological therapy. Finally, Chapter 9 describes emerging nutritional factors in CVD. Two case studies provide practice and application

This program is a Level 2 continuing education activity. This means that you have general knowledge of the literature and professional practice in the areas covered. The focus of the program is to enhance knowledge and application.

Learning Objectives

After completing this activity, nutrition professionals will better be able to:

  1. Apply knowledge of CVD pathophysiology to explain prevention and treatment strategies.
  2. Implement CVD risk reduction tools in patient care.
  3. Practice cardiovascular prevention guidelines to develop and evaluate meal plans for those at risk for developing CVD.
  4. Apply the nutrition care process (NCP) and integrate medical nutrition guidelines to develop and evaluate meal plans for patients and clients with CVD.
  5. Integrate CVD pathophysiology and medical therapy knowledge to explain emerging issues in nutrition and CVD.

Robert Iafelice, MS, RD, LDN, is a freelance medical writer and member of the American Medical Writers Association. He has contributed several chapters to the 6th edition of Disease Prevention and Treatment, a medical reference book of evidence-based protocols to combat the diseases of aging. Among the protocols he authored, “Celiac Disease and Non-Celiac Gluten Sensitivity” is particularly relevant to this CPE program.

Robert received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Chemistry from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio, and a Master of Science degree in Nutrition Science from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. Most of his experience as a practicing registered dietitian was in the field of integrative/functional medicine with a focus on food allergy. Robert provided medical nutrition therapy at an integrative allergy-immunology clinic in Chicago, where he specialized in conducting double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenges – the gold standard for food allergy diagnosis.

Robert’s diverse background also includes extensive experience in fitness/wellness as a gym owner, university nutrition instructor, health educator in the nutraceuticals industry, and oncology. His other writing interests include intermittent fasting, nutritional ketosis, and high-intensity interval training.
