This continuing education activity is designed to help you demonstrate your practical and clinical knowledge while working with people with thyroid disease. It is also designed to help you earn 28 continuing education credits for dietetics (CDR CPEU).
Learning Objectives
After completing this activity, nutrition professionals will better be able to:
Discuss an overview of the thyroid gland and its functions as relevant to dietetics practice.
Communicate potential health benefits of various foods and dietary patterns in the management of thyroid diseases and dispel myths regarding unhealthy practices.
Counsel clients and patients in meeting recommended intakes for calories, protein, iodine, and other key nutrients related to thyroid disease.
Assess the use of alternative therapies for hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, and thyroid cancer and their appropriateness within the scope of dietetics practice and American Thyroid Association (ATA) guidelines.
Identify scenarios where a physician or specialist should be sought for referral or follow-up.
Additional Information
Nicole Anziani, MS, RD, CDN, CDCES is a Registered Dietitian and Certified Diabetes Care and Education Specialist, with a focus on the management of thyroid conditions. She received her BS at the University of California, Berkeley, an MS at New York University, and completed her dietetic internship at the James J Peters VA Medical Center in the Bronx, NY. As a thyroid cancer survivor, Anziani’s passion and mission are to make nutrition care information for thyroid conditions easily accessible to practitioners and patients. She is the author of The Health Professional’s Guide to Nutrition Management of Thyroid Disease; the first RD peer-reviewed, American Thyroid Association physician-reviewed, and evidence-based practice guidebook to instruct dietitians and allied healthcare professionals on MNT for thyroid disease, published by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics in 2020. Additionally, she was a founding member of the Board of the American College of Thyroidology.
